Good to know
Welcome to our Hot Springs Forest Cottage! Our woodland cottage is one of two homes situated on 5 peaceful and wild acres of oak-hickory-pine forest in the foothills of the Ouachita Mountains right next to the national park and historic downtown Hot Springs. As former Hot Springs National Park rangers, my wife and I have thoughtfully curated this cabin to be a nature lover's refuge. Our land is minutes from trails of Northwoods and Cedar Glades Mountain bike parks, as well as the Sunset Trail, (the longest trail in the national park). It is both a quiet retreat and an ideal base for exploring Hot Springs’ remarkable natural and cultural landscape. We are in the foothills of the Ouachita Mountains very close to the borders of national park land. There is abundant wildlife that visits our property. We have furnished our property with birdhouses, making it an excellent location for birders and birdwatching. Deer can often be spotted in the early mornings and evenings. You will love the vibrant colors of sunset over the mountain ridge while you soak, grill out, enjoy the rocking chairs, or play yard games. Evenings are best spent on the porch or around the fire pit as the forest settles into its nightly rhythm. If you turn off the outdoor lights the stargazing is excellent! Inside, you can cook up a family feast in our fully stocked kitchen, browse our extensive DVD collection, relax on the couch and watch your favorite movie or play some board games. The QLED flat screen and Starlink high-speed internet ensure modern convenience while you are cozy in the peace of our woodland refuge. The house has 2 beds and two fold out couches. There is studio bedroom downstairs with a queen size bed. There is also a high quality queen size sleeper sofa in the adjacent living room. An outdoor staircase leads to our upstairs loft bedroom. The upstairs loft looks out on the forest canopy and has its own comfy queen bed as well as a convertible memory foam coach for movie nights. The loft has its own HD flatscreen TV, games, puzzles and library. We have taken care to provide many kid-friendly dvds and games too so the whole family can enjoy their time here. Both of our bedrooms have plush memory foam queen beds with high quality linens. The downstairs studio has a bamboo standing closet and a forest view from the beautifully crafted rattan bed. We have two modern full baths - both of which are located downstairs. There is one in the laundry room which is at the bottom of the outdoor stairs to the loft, (and has both outside and inside access). The other is by the kitchen in the downstairs studio. We provide soft robes and plenty of towels. The kitchen is equipped with a gas range, toaster, microwave, coffee maker, blender, crockpot, Instapot and all the essentials - which makes it easy to prepare meals after a day outdoors. We provide basic oils and spices, coffee, cream and sugar. Our covered carport has a grill, outdoor lounging and dining furniture. From here you can take in the forest and the beautiful sunsets over the mountain, (best view on the property). The Wildcat cottage sits across the yard from the Wildcat Log Cabin, which is another vacation rental we offer. This and the barns are the only spaces on our 5 acres that are off limits to respect the privacy of the other guests. Each house has its own private parking, yard, grill and firepit. You can rent both houses for a bigger group and get the whole secluded property to yourselves, (sleeps 12). We’ve curated this space for travelers who appreciate both the science and the story of Hot Springs, “the Valley of the Vapors.” Now home to 47 geothermal springs this valley is where geology, ecology, and human history meet in one of the country’s most unique parks. The park here was founded and protected before Yellowstone or the National Park Service existed, in 1832. In addition to Bathhouse Row and the National Park, there are many other great local attractions to explore. We are only 15 miles from Lake Ouachita State Park, 13 miles from Garvan Woodland Gardens and 10 miles or less to Oaklawn Horse Racing and Casino, Lake Hamilton and Mid-America Science Museum. Whether you’re here to hike the Goat Rock or the Sunset Trail, bike Northwoods & Cedar Glades, explore Bathhouse Row’s opulent historic bathhouses, or try craft beer brewed from the thermal water at Superior Bathhouse, (the only brewery in a national park), the Wildcat Cottage offers the perfect balance of serenity, adventure, history, and comfort. This house can sleep 8, although four of those would be on foldout beds. Please request with the host if you would like to do this.
Other Details to Note
Fires in the firepit may not be left unattended. You must make sure they are totally out when you are done. If you plan on using the firepit you must procure your own firewood. We recommend stopping at a grocery store before reaching Hot Springs. The 10 minute drive to our house from downtown Hot Springs is a windy and hilly forest road and it can be very dark at night. Please take it slow, use your brights and look out for deer and other animals crossing the road. We see them often! Wildcat Estates lane is a dirt road with only four families that live on it. Please take it slow. Our property is the last driveway on the right. You will see a stone sign and an old historic chicken coup at the entrance to the drive. Sound travels easily in our valley. Please respect quiet hours and be mindful of your noise levels after 10:00pm and before 7:00am. There is a first aid kit in the bathroom cabinets and a fire extinguisher under the sink. There is no bathroom in the loft upstairs. We paid to install a brand new full bath right at the bottom of the outdoor stairs with a separate door to access it for those sleeping in the loft.
